Welcome class! Over the next few weeks we will be exploring famous inventions and inventors. After we become masters of what an invention is, we will have the opportunity to create an invention of your own. However, before we can get to this point we must first discover how and why things are invented.
Think about the products that you use daily. Are these inventions? For most products your answer will be yes. Looking around the room you can find hundreds of inventions (your shoes, our desks, pencils, scissors, computers, light bulbs... we could list inventions for days!) Now think about how many different versions of each product have been invented and why. Each version is adapted to fit a certain need. As we explore inventions and their inventors, keep your eye out for products that you could re-invent to fit one of your needs in a better way.
This week lets keep our eyes and minds open as we begin our inventions unit.
Today's Tasks:
-- Begin researching and decide on what invention and inventor you will focus on. You will write a 1-2 page paper on the inventor and invention you choose, (but for today just begin an outline including a short biography on the inventor, what the invention is, and why that invention is important).
When you finish you should have a cover page, a 1-2 page report, and a bibliography.
Here's a possible outline to follow:
1. The Invention
a. Who invented it?
b. When and where was it invented?
2. Reasons Needed
a. Why was the invention needed?
b. What problem did it solve?
c. What problem did it create?
3. Uses
a. Who needed it?
b. Who uses it now?
c. What might it look like in the future?
4. Description
a. What does it look like?
b. How does it work?
5. Different Types
a. What are the various types?
b. How do they differ?
